YAY! Our first hair post is happening. Here’s the thing, Summer truly, and I mean truly despises getting her hair done. Her signature style ( the wild and untamed fro) began early. Once I realized doing her hair would be torture to the both of us, I made things. Just let the girl and her hair FREE. Do as little as possible. ( w00sah) No exaggeration, the girl cries for help each and every time it’s time for me to do her hair. Pray for me, please.
Let me add, I really should have done a wash post prior to this one, but bare with me. She was willing to sit today and I just so happened had the courage to take pictures to show how we get her infamous large fro.
Dry two strand twist are my favorite. They give me so much life and gives Sparkle’s hair so much volume. Seriously, I have a little hair envy because her hair is so thick and with three different textures it’s sometimes hard to take care of all three properly. But one thing I have learned is the less the touch it the more room you give the hair to do it’s own thing. The only time I touch is when I am adding some moisturizer to it. So that’s, in between her twist out, or for wash day, and dry twist out day. I do her hair probably once a week, moisture everyday, very lightly and that’s it.
I will also add, that not every mom, like the wild afro look. As much as we get compliments on her hair, we also get the nasty comments and rude remarks. Mama taught me early, to do whatever floats my boat and I’ve been doing it ever since.
and now for the products:
Vitamin E oil, can’t live without it. Also, use it for our skin and hair. Just a small amount will go a long way. I hate that trader joes only has small bottles of this oil, because we go through them quick.
Olive Oil & Mango Butter: love the consistency of this, works pretty good on all textures ( I’ve tried on my hair, Sparkles and SJ’s). it moisturizes her hair really well, without leaving it greasy and weighing it down nor does it leave product build up ( major plus when doing a twist out). Sparkle also thinks the smell is delicious. lol
Lotta Body: Hands down, BOMB. I use just a small amount to help Sparkle’s curl pattern. Her curl pattern and hair is so thick sometimes, it’s hard to see her curls without manipulating her hair with product. I opt for this vs gel because it doesn’t leave a crunch nor residue.
Hair Softener: Let me tell you something, if you don’t buy anything else, I have mentioned , buy this. I found this about two years ago when SJ hair was hard as a rock. Im talking brillo pad. It was awful. My sis in law had this at the house and it looked like a joke. Until I felt my nephew hair and the joke was on me. I ran right to Walmart and picked this up along with their moisturizer. The kids hair are so darn soft it’s ridiculous. I share this product with everyone because no one told me not to wash natural hair so often. I made the mistake with SJ and it took two years for me to get his hair to a point where it’s healthy again.
Spray Bottle: just necessary. i tend to spray at her tips to get them really saturated. I learned thats what helps the twist when you unravel them. Nothing like having some good curls and the bottom are tragedy just ruins the entire look. I will add that I do scary water on her roots because they are so darn thick, this helps me to detangle it a bit before I twist. Speaking of detangle, you will notice i do not have a comb or brush pictures. Sparkles goes crazy once I use them. Sometimes I can sneak in the denman brush and I LOVE the results when we use that. Sometimes i just opt for my fingers and pray Jesus runs his hands through her matted roots.
Well, that’s all folks. Our past hair regimen are here and here. Hope this helps you. Let me know if you have any questions. I will try and do a wash day post very soon. Just have to make sure Sparkle is up for it.
